Inclusive Design

In many ways, Inclusive Design and similar initiatives such as Universal Design were pioneering approaches for advancing equity in the built environment.

While interest in Inclusive Design continues to rise, more research is needed to support the growth and adoption of this discipline in practice. Our research at NC State aims to explore repositioning Inclusive Design as an emerging pillar of building performance. Our long-term goal is to reshape the understanding of building performance. We see a future where weight is applied equally to building data, such as water and energy usage, and to aspects of human experiences—including physical, mental, and emotional health, and feelings of belonging, pride, and joy—that are related to equity.
